We need a new desk...badly. Our current desk (which sits next to the kitchen in our small condo) was purchased rather hastily after months and months of renovations. I've never liked it and we bought it on the cheap, so while I am not exactly sorry that we have to replace it I am finding it really hard to come up with an alternative. The space it can fit in is small, and our iMac is big (
note: do NOT take your husband into the actual Apple Store when purchasing an iMac. They will instantly be dazzled by the size of the screens and you will wind up taking home a computer the size of a small television...that is unless said husband also purchased your television that is the size of a football stadium...but I am losing focus)

I need a nice desk that is small but still has storage. And seeing as how we won't be in the condo for several more years, I don't want to pay too much for it. I've been looking all over rather unsuccessfully and then saw the above image
at the container store. What do you think? We wouldn't have the drawers underneath and only two of the three shelves that are pictured. Are those white rails just too ugly? I am having a bit of a hard time getting over them...

Go for it! They also have the rails (and other pieces) in platinum. The Elfa system is awesome and I can't say enough wonderful things about it! It's easy to put together and you can take the whole thing with you to a new home and add shelves or baskets and make it into a closet system, or keep it as your desk.
I think the concept is great...one I wish I had seen before I bought our current desk.
That being said - I hate the rails. Even in a different color, I think they are too....hrm...work-shoppy looking. I think you could do nearly the same thing without the rails using wall anchors and shelves - the local hardware store should be able to help.
Good luck.
I like the concept too. But I'm just not a huge fan. It wouldn't "go" in our apartment, but it might be great in your place.
we have a similar set-up from elfa that the previous owners of our house installed.
You can see it here, in this picture (from the listing - our office is way too messy now for me to be sharing any pics, lol!): http://tinyurl.com/l3oa8v -- here's another picture of the other half of the room (as you can see, it's a pretty small space): http://tinyurl.com/npejhv
Like PP mentioned, I'd consider the platinum rails -- that's what we have. And also take into consideration the wall color and the shelves themselves, which may further disguise the hardware.
I like it. The white rails don't stick out because all the other accessories are also white and they tie everything together.
Paint the rails and the bottom brackets with metal paint. You should be able to find something that coordinates or blends into your wall color.
not a huge fan of the rails, but i love the organized system they have going on.
We've used that type of shelving in our kitchen, bathroom and office. We love it. My suggestions are to make it pretty (the rails can be painted, shelves can be lined) or you'll go insane after a year, and not to skimp on the support. The brackets are cheap (Home Depot sells a version of the Elfa shelving) and you'll appreciate it when your shelves don't bow.
I love it! It's perfect!
It's cute! It totally reminds me of this DIY Project from d*s (http://www.designspongeonline.com/2008/04/diy-project-susannahs-atlas-inspired-shelves.html)...If you're handy, you could make it work on the cheap!
We did the elfa shelving in our old apartment, and it was a lifesaver! Actually, I know this sounds random but we're moving out this week and aren't taking it with us - if you happen to live in NYC I'd love to give it to you so it doesn't go into the dumpster? Drop me a blog comment if you're interested... LOVE your blog, by the way!
xoxo,
Lulu
