Sunrise, Sunset

For my birthday gift, my wonderful husband gave me one of the best presents I can think of - an escape from the cold and snow! Not only that, but we went to stay with one of my favorite people on the planet. There was too much relaxing and sun worshiping for an abundance of pictures but the trip did include one sunrise and two very beautiful sunsets. The sunrise above is from our very early plane ride. I love this one since you can still see the moon:
I might have to make the beach sunset my wallpaper so I can mentally escape there every few minutes. Really, is it spring yet?

I like bowls

It's a weird thing to just throw out there, a statement marking my affinity for a very particular type of dinnerware. But there you have it - I really like bowls. A lot. I am not even a person who eats a great deal of oatmeal or foods that require the use of bowls on a regular basis. I just really like them, mostly the smaller versions. I have this bowl from Circa Ceramics and it brings me joy whenever I use it. And now I've set my sights on these from P.O.S.H:

They don't even remotely match the rest of our dishes and whether or not we even have the cabinet space is highly questionable. But I would sure like to sip some cafe au lait out of one.

"We Have Chosen Hope Over Fear"

It's been a rough day in my little world, but witnessing today's events still fills me with a sense of hope. I stood out in the snow in Chicago and watched our 44th president being sworn in, something I am not likely to forget anytime soon. No matter what your political beliefs may be, I hope that feeling of optimism finds you as well.

And at the very least you have to agree that Sasha Obama is simply too cute standing on her little box up there, watching her Dad become president.

Birthday Wishes

I celebrated my birthday this weekend, a small but lovely celebration with family that involved margaritas, hysterical laughter and a surprise trip in the near future. And then I returned home to find the most wonderful bouquet from friends. These are just some of the pictures I took this morning while enjoying a much needed break from work. Aren't they beautiful?

Orla Kiely for Target

I know that it's all over the blogging world yesterday but I still can't stop myself from writing about here. In February Orla Kiely is launching a line at Target! According to Apartment Therapy there will be "dinner and servingware, storage boxes, closet organization, table and kitchen linens and even an apron." Oh how I love that apron (well, me and everyone else who heard the news). Apparently the line launches the very first week in February, so we won't have to wait long. Zinnia Print

This amazing print is made entirely from magazine pages - how great is that? I don't really have a place for it or a reason for the purchase, but at only $14.50 I am incredibly tempted. Or maybe I could take some of the magazines sitting around the condo (that Brad despises) and try to make one myself. You can also purchase the print in greeting card form. Hmmm...

Love From Lola

When it gets really cold here (oh how I hate the cold) all kinds of crazy things happen in our drafty condo. About a week before Christmas it got so cold that we woke up to find all of the windows iced over from the inside. Poor little Lola lives to watch the traffic and all the activity eight floors below, so she was really put out that she couldn't see out the window.

Later that afternoon I looked over to see that she had pressed her nose against the kitchen window, still trying desperately to look out, and left little nose prints in a line. Don't they kind of look like hearts? I thought it was so cute I had to take a picture.

Mustard Roasted Potatoes

My friend Ina sent me one of her cookbooks for Christmas, with which I am now mildly obsessed (or Santa brought it, whatever). I am sure there are some sort of rules against me just giving out her recipes willy-nilly all over the internet (that's right, I just used the phrase willy-nilly) so instead I'll link to a similar one from someone equally as fabulous. Simultaneously, I will try to shake the feeling that I am currently making almost no sense at all.

These potatoes are seriously so easy and so outrageously good. Ina's recipe calls only for the red skinned potatoes, and I only used about 5 of them which is more than enough for two people. Her version also leaves out the butter and the lemon peel, which is convenient considering I still don't have a new grater. But if you're in the market for an easy potato recipe, I highly suggest this one.

A Recipe, A Little Too Late

Hello out there! I didn't intend to take such a long blogging break over the holidays but it just kind of worked out that way. I hope that you all had a lovely end to December and a great beginning to the New Year. We were able to get out of the city for awhile to some warmer weather, celebrate with family, and then ring in the husband's 30th bday with friends. Many more details to come but for now I wanted to share a new recipe that my Mom tested out on Christmas day - sausage and cranberry stuffing. I thought it sounded gross at first but it was seriously so good, definitely a new holiday staple. And I realize I am sharing holiday recipes after the season is over, but now you'll have it for next year! Here are the details:

1 pkg. (16 oz.) Sausage
1/2 cup butter
6 celery stalks, finely diced
2 medium onions, finely diced
1 pkg. (12 oz.) herb flavor stuffing mix
1 cup dried cranberries
1 tsp. salt
2 cans (14.5 oz. each) chicken broth

Preheat oven to 325F. In large skillet, crumble and cook sausage until browned. Remove from pan. In same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Sauté celery and onions until softened, about 5 minutes. In a large bowl, combine celery, onions, sausage, stuffing mix, cranberries and salt. Add the broth and stir until well mixed. If desired, loosely stuff some of the mixture into a turkey just before roasting. Place the rest of the stuffing mix into a casserole dish. Cover and bake at 325F for 1 hour or until hot.
